Climate Change Consciousness

Fort Miley, San Francisco

I spent some time recently re-instilling the basic reason I will always choose to preserve and protect our incredible California coastline and beyond. I am so incredibly fortunate to live in a state where this fight is at the core of neighborhoods and communities. With our Political climate overpowering our environmental one, now more than ever we need to instill 3 imperative things. Climate change consciousness, Conversation. And lastly, we need to let go of something which is holding us back from it, Comfort.

We make thousands of decisions a day. Some as menial as, tall or grande, but when these small decisions are enveloped in climate change consciousness, they can be incredibly powerful actions. My goal is not to tell you what decisions to make but to encourage habit forming patterns of thought on individual impact on the environment. This will lead to a customized and sustainable change that you personally feel right about. Whether you choose to ditch the disposable coffee cup for a new bad ass ceramic mug, or charge full bore into Veganism, is completely up to you.

Start with strong daily intention and the rest will flow, but you need to start

Hopefully, setting these intentions will help us collectively break through the stigma of discussing environmental issues with one another. Our problem was dubbed and “Inconvenient Truth” because it is a harsh, saddening, intrusive, and overwhelming topic of discussion. No one person can bare the weight of this reality, which is what it feels like we are being TOLD we MUST DO when we are bombarded with depressing facts and figures. We buckle with frustration and resentment, and ultimately many of us ignore it, hoping the pollutant fueled giant is just a figment of our imagination, but the truth is, this monster is growing and it’s plastic entwined tentacles are slowly gripping around the earth’s dwindling life source.

There, I snuck in a dramatic depressing visual just to send the point home.

Ok, take a breath and shake it out.

That wasn’t so bad, was it?

The next time you click past that documentary or news article, please give in to the pin prick. Be “inconvenienced” and let yourself feel the discomfort. Then again, take a deep strong breath. There is hope, there is action, and there are millions of us fighting together. Grab one of our hands and let’s get to work.

Today, be brave and initiate a discussion with a friend or family member about something you’ve discovered that has or could positively impact our environment. If you think the conversation will be difficult, wrap the conversation around something that person loves or is impassioned about and leave judgement at the door. The less we criticize one another for what we’ve been doing wrong and instead focus on what we can be doing right, the more receptive we will all be to the encompassing magnitude of this problem.
